What are Regional Dialogues?

As part of its regional engagement workstream, UICC regularly brings together the cancer community through interactive workshops named UICC Regional Dialogues to foster peer-to-peer learning and networking amongst UICC Members regarding key themes for the region, with the participation of representatives of partners and networks.

These regional gatherings of UICC members have taken many forms over the years, including a series of ‘Leadership in Action’ meetings held between 2017 and 2019. In 2020 and 2021, the regional series of Virtual Dialogues ensured the continuity of discussions at the regional level on key topics.

In 2022, UICC resumed holding these workshops in the in-person format with the launch of a series on women’s cancers in different regions, with two Regional Dialogues held in July in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire and a second one in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. As part of this series on women's cancers, a third Regional Dialogue was held in Manila, Philippines on 10-11 May 2023 for Asia-Pacific.

Why Regional Dialogues are important

Cancer control is subject to regional specificities regarding access to cancer services, the landscape of civil society representation and actions, and the factors contributing to cancer incidence and mortality. This means that UICC member organisations may face particular challenges depending on where they operate. They need solutions and best practices adapted to their own settings.

To address this need for context-specific perspectives and provide a dedicated platform for regional communities to interact and share best practices, UICC Regional Dialogues serve as an opportunity for UICC members, partners and networks to exchange on key themes at the regional level.

The Regional Dialogues complement other signature events organised by UICC, which are the World Cancer Congress and the World Cancer Leaders’ Summit.

Key objectives of Regional Dialogues include:

  • Provide UICC members with a space to connect with each other and exchange views and experiences on common challenges and opportunities in the region on a specific relevant theme.
  • Foster regional thematic collaborations and shared learning at the regional level on the selected theme from a multistakeholder perspective, including the private sector, as well as UN agencies, and technical and financial partners from relevant global health areas.

The overall expected impact is to harness the expertise and experience across members and other key stakeholders in the region and build a self-supporting community of peers, which will help catalyse collaborations by and for the region in the longer term.
